Chapter 1

Beth didn't know what to do with herself as she paced back and forth in her room. She had been living in Mr. James "cabin" since moving to New Hampshire. Her head had been full of thoughts about Dave again. She always had a little crush on Dave when he was her boss at WNYX, but she'd never done anything about it. Her and Dave had nothing in common, plus he and Lisa had dated. She couldn't go behind her friend Lisa's back. She was afraid that Lisa might still have feelings for Dave, and even if she didn't it would be so... awkward. Beth had moved to New Hampshire partly to get away from Dave. Beth thought she could forget Dave there, but that old saying, absence makes the heart grow fonder, must be true she thought. It was nearly 3 a.m., she couldn't sleep again. "What am I going to do?" she asked herself out loud. I just have to tell someone about this, she thought to herself. She needed some advice, but she didn't know who she could talk to about this. She wasn't going to a psychiatrist, only crazy people went to shrinks. Besides, she didn't have that kind of money. The only people she knew in New Hampshire were Lisa, Joe, Max and Mr. James. She couldn't talk to Lisa for obvious reasons, Joe wasn't the kind of guy you went to for advice, and Max had a thing for her. Maybe I could talk to Mr. James she thought. He was always like a father to her. That's it she thought, I'll talk to Mr. James in the morning.

Chapter 2

Beth knocked on the door to Mr. James' study.
"Who is it?" she heard him ask from the other side of the door.
"It's me, Beth." She replied.
"Come on in." She opened the door "Mr. James, can I talk to you?" she asked hesitantly.
"Well, sure", he said smiling, "You know I'm always here anytime you need me." "Okay." Beth said shutting the door behind her. "I need some advice."
"What about?" Mr. James asked.
"It's about a man." she replied shyly.
"Oh, did one of those local boys turn your pretty little head?"
"Well, not exactly." she said.
"Well tell Jimmy all about it."
"Well this isn't easy to admit, but I think I'm in love with Dave."
"Dave?' Mr.James asked. "You don't mean Dave Dave, do you?"
"That's the one." she moaned as she buried her head in her hands.
"Dave Nelson? Dave from WNYX?" Mr.James asked dumbfounded.
"Uh huh." Beth answered, face still buried in her hands.
"How long have you felt this way?" Mr. James asked.
"Too long." Beth sighed, "You see, I never said anything because of Lisa."
"I see." said Mr. James.
"And I don't know if Dave even noticed that I was alive!" Beth said exasperated. "Well it seems to me you shold tell him how you feel and find out."Mr. James said. "But he's still in New York." Beth said. "Well, that's not a problem, I can get you a private helicopter to take you there."
"Really?" Beth asked, "But what about Lisa?"
"Lisa can get her own helicopter." Mr. James replied.
"No, Mr. James, I meant don't you think Lisa might get upset."
"Oh, well Lisa is married now, she broke up with Dave. I'm sure she would want you to do whatever makes you happy."
"Oh, thank you Mr. James!" Beth said jumping up and down. "You're the best! I have to get ready!"
Beth exclaimed as she ran out of the room. She came running back in to give him a hug.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" she squealed.

Chapter 3

Beth stared nervously out the window of the helicopter. Maybe this is a mistake, she thought. What am I going to say? She had a million butterflies in her stomach. Here goes nothing, she thought as the helicopter landed. As she walked through the doorway of the WNYX office she half expected to see the old gang there. But of course the office was filled with strangers.
"Beth!' she heard someone call out behind her. She turned around,
"Matthew! Oh my God it's so good to see you!" she said as Matthew eveloped her in a bear hug.
"What are you doing here?" Matthew asked.
"Oh, I... uh came to see you guys again. We miss you." she replied.
"Oh, wait till Dave sees you!" Matthew said excitedly, "He'll be so suprised." "That's for sure." Beth muttered under her breath.
"Come on!" Matthew said as he grabbed Beth's arm and pulled her towards Dave's office.
"Dave!", Matthew said as he burst through the door, "Look who's here!"
"Beth." Dave said, with a smile spreading across his face.
"Hi, Dave." Beth said.
"How are you?" he asked as he gave her a hug.
"I'm fine." she replied.
"So how's life in New Hampshire." Dave asked.
"It's okay, not as exciting as New York, but.."
"How is everyone?" Matthew interrupted. "Oh, well, you know pretty much the same."
"So how long are you in town for?" Dave asked.
"I'm not really sure." Beth answered.
"It's just so good to see you again! You look great!" Dave said. Beth could feel herself blushing.
"We should all get together and talk tonight." Dave suggested.
"That sounds great." Beth replied.
"Oh I wish I could come, but I think one of my cats is coming down with something. I really want to keep an eye on her." Mathew explained, "Oh but don't let me stop you. You guys go ahead without me. We'll just meet up some other time." "Okay." Beth said relieved, good this will give me a chance to talk to Dave alone, she thought to herself.

Chapter 4

Beth and Dave took a seat at a table in the back of the restaurant. After they received their food, Beth turned to Dave. "Dave, the reason I came to New York was to talk to you."
"Is something wrong?" Dave asked concerned.
"No." Beth replied, "I need to tell you something I should have said a long time ago."
"What is it?" Dave asked, his face filled with confusion.
"Okay," Beth said as she sucked in a deep breath, "I'm very attracted to you." she blurted out. "I have been ever since you first came to work at the station. But then you and Lisa started dating, so I never said anything. But after I moved to New Hampshire, I realized how much I cared for you. So anyway, I just had to tell you or I'd go crazy wondering what if."
"Well I have to say I'm more than a little suprised." Dave said smiling,
"But I also have to admit that I've always been a little... attracted to you."
"Really?" Beth asked.
"Yeah," Dave replied, "I guess I never really thought I was... your type."
"I know it's kind of like that song!" Beth said.
"What song?" Dave asked.
"Oh, you know that one by Aerosmith, Dude Looks Like a Lady. That part where they say "so never judge a book by its cover, or who you're gonna love by your lover." Beth replied.
"Isn't that song about a cross dresser?" Dave asked.
"Yeah, so...? Beth answered.
"Nothing." Dave said with a laugh. "I really missed you. You've always been a good friend."
"Do you think we could be more than friends?" Beth asked hopefully.
"Well, we can certainly try can't we?" Dave said smiling.
"So I guess this is sort of like our first date, huh?" Beth asked.
"I guess so." Dave replied.

After dinner Dave brought Beth back to her hotel and walked her to her room. "Here we are." she said when they reached her door.
"Goodnight." Dave said before leaning in and kissing her. Beth was caught a little off guard, but she quickly returned Dave's kiss. She felt his arms wrap around her and pull her closer. When the kiss ended Dave stepped back.
"Wow." Beth said.
"Well, goodnight again." Dave said as he turned to walk away.
"Dave." Beth called out,
"Would you like to come in?"
"I'd love to." Dave replied.

Chapter 5

The next morning Beth called Mr. James, she told him what Dave had said.
"That's great." Mr. James said.
"I know!" Beth gushed. "The only problem is Dave still lives in New York and I live in New Hampshire." "Well, if you want to move back to New York I'm sure I could pull a few strings and find you a job."
"Really, Mr. James?" Beth asked happily. "Sure I'll be fine here. I've still got Lisa and Joe to keep me company."
"And Max." Beth added.
"Oh yeah... him too." Mr. James said wistfully.
"I don't know how to thank you." Beth said.
"That's okay, just knowing your happy is thanks enough. You've always been like the daughter I never had."After Beth finished talking to Mr. James on the phone, she walked over and sat down at the breakfast table with Dave. She leaned over and gave him a kiss.
"Good morning." she said.
"So, what are we going to do now?" Dave asked, Beth just smiled at him.
"We'll see."
